BORN on April 8, 1932, in Johor Baru, Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail as- cended to the throne on May 11, 1981.
He became the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from April 26, 1984, until April 25, 1989.
He received his early education at Ngee Heng Prima- ry School in Johor Baru before continuing his studies at English College, later known as Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar.
He went on to study at Trinity Grammar School in Australia and then to Britain.
Upon completing his studies, Sultan Iskandar returned to Johor and served as Cadet Officer with the Johor civil service.
On April 29, 1981, he was made Tengku Mahkota (Crown Prince).
Sultan Iskandar was known to be close to his subjects, paying close attention to them especially in difficult times.
The Sultan also received basic military training with the Johor Military Forces founded by his great-grandfather Sultan Abu Bakar in 1885. He was the commander of the Johor Military Forces before he passed away.
Among his hobbies were polo and boardsailing. He also had a passion for helicopters and ships.
The Sultan was once admitted to the same hospital in January 2008 for bronchitis.
